The Grand Budapest Hotel

Must Go
Did he just throw my cat out of the window?

This is a wonderful movie. Tilda Swinton, yes, darling I have had older, is beautiful. Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) as M. Gustave H is the best concierge on the continent. Agatha (Saoirse Ronan) does have a birthmark in the shape of Mexico on her cheek. Willem Defoe (Green Goblin) as Jopling is scary and Jeff Goldblum (The Fly) is wonderful as Deputy Kovacs, a lawyer and flying cat owner. This just scratches the surface of all the great actors in this movie.

The movie is a chase film that is incredibly endearing. The outdoors are spectacular and the interiors are majestic.

If you ever wondered what Hitchcock meant by a Mac Guffin look no further than Boy with Apple.
You really need to go to this movie!

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Go
A delightful return to the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. A big disappointment was the short was not a Bullwinkle cartoon. However what was shown was ok.
For the youngsters out there who did not race home from high school to tune in. Mr. Peabody is a dog who keeps a boy named Sherman. He takes him on adventures into the past in the WABAC (way back) machine. It always ended with a pithy statement. “Remember Sherman you cannot have your cake and eat it too” (groan)

Spoiler too cute not to reveal.
Sherman is explaining some of their trips and says “The Leaning Tower of Pisa wasn’t always leaning.”

I did find the drawing of the people to be a little disturbing. Their heads are huge compared to their tiny bodies.
Over all I did enjoy this movie, just remember that every dog deserves a boy.

Veronica Mars

Go
If you are a “marshmallow” (fan of the TV show), you have already downloaded the movie you helped produce via kickstarter. This movie is made primarily for the fans.

However, I found a delightful mystery movie that was well put together. I did feel I was missing most of the references; but that did not interfere with my enjoyment. Pleasing plot twists, and good characters, I say go. I will probably buy the TV series and then see it again.

12 Years a Slave

Go,
But don’t be sucked in by Hollywood’s revisionist history. You will be dismayed at the cruelty and you will cry at the final reunion. You will agree that a Canadian abolitionist is the greatest of hero’s. However a check of the facts will reveal an entirely different story. I will leave that to you. HINT: see James Garner and Louis Gossett Jr. in Skin Game.

Google this: The Irish slave trade – the forgotten white slaves. Remember that 12 years a slave was written by northern abolitionists. Still the movie showcases memorable performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o.

Brisco County Jr.

Must See DVD 1993

I have not seen any good movies lately so I started watching The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

This steam punk/western/scifi tv show from 1993 stars the greatest B movie star of all time Bruce Campbell (aka Ash Williams). You have to love him as Elvis in Bubba Hotep.

You will also be surprised to see Christian Clemenson as Socrates Poole, later of Boston Legal ( Jerry “Hands” Espenson). It is really amazing how many movies he has been in.

Lord Bowler (Julius Carry) is also terrific. So sad that he died of pancreatic cancer in 2008.

I fell in love with Kelly Rutherford as Dixie Cousins. She is gorgeous and sweet. Unfortunately when you read about her custody fight you realize she must be a complete biotch. O well that acting for you.

We cannot forget to mention Comet the wonder horse.

The show is a wonderful collection of action, snappy one liners and sight gags like the bull running through the china shop.
Buy this series and you will own 27 episodes of great entertainment.
