Riddick

Go
The third installment in the Riddick series, this is exactly what you would expect. Vin Diesel is great as the invincible alien with glowing eyes.
The story is close to Pitch Black, the first movie in the series. It is really about monsters and bounty hunters and a sweet dog. If you are looking for a very standard adventure science fiction story this is it.
“Strong survival instinct, I admire that in a woman.” Riddick about Dahl ( a real doll).

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Go – Seattle Musical Theater
Did you see the movie? This is only roughly based on it. If you like live musical theater this is the place to go. Free parking and cheap tickets, there are usually seats available.
I thought this was a little long at three hours; but it was entertaining. David Roby is amazing. He is a rubber man like a Jim Carrey. Mark Waldstein is great as the older scoundrel. The dance routines are terrific. Kristin Burch as Christine will tug your heart strings. The band joins in with musical jokes that are delightful. All in all, you are a fool if you don’t go.

Unfinished Song

Must Go
A six hanky film. Go see it!
Possible spoiler alert.
General Zod, from Superman 2, is watching his wife die from cancer. (First two hankies) He is an extreme sourpuss, even worse than me. He alienates his son but is saved by his granddaughter. (Next two hankies) Finally the music teacher for old folks gets him to do a solo song at the competition and they win third place. (Final two hankies) This is a great film – go see it.

The Taming of the Shrew

Go   at Ashland, Oregon
This is a good play. It is hard not to watch Bianca a tall leggy blonde played to ditzy perfection by Royer Bockus. Every time she is referred to they change her name, Beyonce, Bacteria, Betty it is hilariously subtle humor.
The show is carried by Kate, the shrew, and Petruchio the husband. It is about love and what it means to be husband and wife.
Kate is beyond feisty and independent and not about to be subservient to her husband. She finally realizes that her husband has her on the highest pedestal. When he declares that the moon is the brightest sun she finally caves in.

The End

NO GO
I went because this was touted as a great comedy. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 84%.
Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson shame on you! What a great disappointment.
This is only funny if you enjoy junior high school boys who have just found their penises. It is a narcissistic tale of spoiled little rich actors. Do yourself a favor and avoid this movie.

Washington State Fair

Go
It was senior day at the Fair. She who must be obeyed and I started out going to the drug store to get discount tickets ($7.50 ea), then a long drive to Puyallup and parking ($10.00). I got to see the giant pumpkins and the quilts my favorite exhibits. Then five hours of walking around and eating. The food was very disappointing just ten dollar hamburgers and four dollar drinks; of course on the way out we found the cheap food back in the corner behind the grandstand.
My favorite time was with a little girl showing her dog, a Border Terrier, and telling me that it sheds the least of all dogs. She repeated that three times and said if I get a dog it should be a Border Terrier. She was just too cute.
We had our obligatory scone and drove home – exhausted.

We’re the Millers

Go
We’re the Millers is a raunchy, hilarious and ultimately sweet-natured road trip comedy. Jason Sudeikis and Will Poulter offer great performances and Jennifer Aniston, who I usually don’t like, is exceptional. Go for a good comedy.

The Grandmaster

Maybe Go
“There are only two words in Kung Fu Horizontal or Vertical. If you are vertical you won.” Ip Man
It has been 55 years since I was speaking Mandarin, although living in Hong Kong I spoke mostly Cantonese. Luckily the sub titles in this film are very good except some go by too quickly. Anyway you don’t go to this movie for the dialogue, check out the cinematography and the fight scenes are very dynamic. There are better movies about Ip Man.
